The city of Murray has been around for quite a while-since 1822, to be exact. At that time, it was called Williston. Since then, it has been called Pleasant Springs, but the name Murray was adopted in 1844 (after Representative John Murray), and we've been Murray ever since.

Around the turn of the century, Murray's population was just under 15,000 people; that grew to nearly 18,000 by the 2010 census, and as of two years ago, our population was estimated to be more than 19,000, meaning we've seen about 25% growth in 15 years.

That growth is likely due to our low crime rate, our exciting culture (we play host to several festivals each year, including the Freedom Fest), and our stellar school system. There is also no shortage of things to do in Murray, Kentucky.

The most popular attraction by far is the Arboretum at Murray State for a true immersion in nature. The Playhouse in the Park community theatre group is also popular for its excellent shows that have been entertaining residents for more than 40 years. Locals love to walk the shops of Murray Court Square and always recommend that visitors check out the Wrather West Kentucky Museum while in town.
